SUDAN EMERGENCY APPEAL

A spectacular escarpment with sweeping views across the Weald

What is the main problem in Sudan?

Fighting broke out in Khartoum, Sudan’s capital, on 15 April 2023 as an escalating power struggle between Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) turned deadly.

The roots of the latest conflict can be traced at least as far back as 2003 to violence committed in Darfur.

Sudan is “one of the worst humanitarian nightmares in recent history”, according to UN officials.

What is the situation in Sudan right now?

  • More than 8 million people have been displaced internally, and a further 2 million have been forced to flee into neighbouring countries like Chad and South Sudan. Per UN.

  • The UN’s World Food Programme warn that nearly 28 million people in the region around Sudan face acute food insecurity, including 17.7 million in Sudan, 7 million in South Sudan, and nearly 3 million in Chad.

  • According to the UN, 17.7 million of the 49.4 million people living in Sudan are facing acute food insecurity. This number has more than tripled over the last five years, up from 5.8 million in 2019.

  • 14 million children – half of all children in Sudan – now require humanitarian assistance.

  • 5 million children have been internally displaced (3 million since the outbreak in fighting and 2 million from previous crises).

  • No child should be made to suffer like this.
